PROCESSING SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR SATELLITE

NEW SPACE TECHNOLOGY

EMM on-board electronics has a modular design and can be configured as needed. The core element is a System-on-Module (SoM) based on FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) and SoC (System-on-Chip) technology. Currently, we are developing the first SoMs based on Microchip and NanoXplore devices which will allow our customers to select the best suited processing systems for their demands.

All our SoMs have an FPGA/SoC as the central element which is accompanied with external memories (e.g. SRAM, FRAM, LPDDR4, Flash) and communication interfaces (e.g. I2C, UART, CAN, SpaceWire) as required. Common features of all our SoMs are

  • radiation tolerance

  • capability for in-orbit re-configuration

  • energy-saving modes.

 

Our Smart Processing Module (SPM) is designed for insensitivtiy to radiation loads (up to 20 krad), low power consumption and serial and parallel data processing. It supports high data rates and high data throughput applications, such as camera data processing in Earth Observation missions. The processing is performed in real time allowing the implementation of algorithms for image processing.

Key features are:

 

  • instant-on behavior: The SPM comes online within milliseconds after being powered

  • architecture re-configuration: Several SoC configurations can be stored in the memory

  • Interfaces and routing: Standard interfaces from SPI to SpaceWire and router features. 

Additionally, the SPM comes with a Smart Power Supply (SPS) that provides two special features:

  • two redundant channels for each output that share the electric load

  • protection of SPM and any connected payload against latchups

The two boards can be combined to the Smart Power and Processing Module (SPPM).

With the modular design, the SPPM can be used for many applications. Depending on the project needs, one or multiple application boards can be stacked onto the SPM. 

Firmware blocks are available to enhance SoM functionality with processor softcores, data acquisition and drive/power cores. Inter-board connectors enable the design of stacked units. Therefore, SoMs are connected to other EMM products like secondary power supply or mixed-signal interface provider.
